I know this is an older post but thought I would offer my input on the subject. ADC works just as described by PLC Guru where the configuration of the ADC enabled device is stored in the controller. It can work in two ways, depending on your network layout.  If you are after a truly “plug and play” replacement using ADC, a managed switch must be used with static port addressing configured. This way when power is applied to the new device, the managed switch will assign the IP address to the device  first, then the controller will download the stored configuration including correct firmware if required.  ADC will work without a managed switch, but will require the extra step of the user to manually assign the new device it’s IP address, then the controller can download the config.
