The subnet is a mask and simply says one must have a certain amount of the ip address to match. For instance:

192.168.1.1

255.255.255.0

This says that the ip must match 192.168.1.xxx where the x can range from 0 to 255.

Another example:

192.168.1.1

255.255.0.0

Means you must match 192.168.xxx.xxx. That’s basically what a subnet is for. That’s at least how I understand the purpose of a subnet.
